Qatar and Japan exchanged an official memorandum of understanding on Thursday to initiate a process of mutual visa waivers for regular passport holders of the two countries.

The signing took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Headquarters in Tokyo by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Qatar to Japan Hassan Bin Mohamed Rafea Al Emadi and Assistant Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Director-General for Middle East and Africa Affairs Kansuke Nagaoka.

The move, which is expected to come into force from 2 April, will allow ordinary Qatari passport holders who plan to stay in Japan for a period not exceeding 30 consecutive days to visit Japan without obtaining a visa. increase.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Dr. Majed bin Mohammad Al-Ansari said in the strategic dialogue between Qatar and Japan it is of particular importance to expand the scope of cooperation between the two countries in all areas. .

He made the statement at a weekly media briefing held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters on Thursday. He also said the next round of strategic dialogue will be held in Doha.

Doha and Tokyo have long had ties in multiple sectors, the strongest of which is liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Qatar and Japan’s LNG relationship

Qatar Along with Russia, Australia and Malaysia, it is one of Japan’s largest LNG importers.

In April 2022, Qatar’s Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani and Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida confirmed their cooperation to stabilize energy markets amid the unrest caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. .

With the ongoing war between Moscow and Kyiv and energy security rising as an international concern, Japan and Qatar affirmed their firm stance to maintain close coordination in response to the situation.

The Prime Minister expressed his “hope” for Doha’s contribution and confirmed that the two countries would make joint efforts to contribute to the stabilization of the international energy market.
