Japanese macaque looting attacks dozens of people in Yamaguchi

After wild monkeys attacked at least 45 inhabitants of the western Japanese city of Yamaguchi, authorities armed police officers with tranquilizer guns to confront the predatory macaques. The Japan Times..

The Japanese macaque, also known as the Snow Monkey, crawls through the windows of the house and attacks the inhabitants from behind. Victims range from infants to the elderly. CNN..

Initially, authorities thought of the attack as follows: One rogue monkey — But they now say they can’t be sure if one or a few animals are the cause.

Wildlife management expert Mieko Kiyono, an associate professor at Kobe University, told CNN that Japanese macaques have coexisted with humans for hundreds of years. “Japan has a lot of mountains and the community lives near the mountains where monkeys live, so monkeys can easily enter villages and towns,” Seino said.

Although monkeys live in groups, young males often live alone for a period of time, so the monkeys that caused the attack are likely to be males, Seino said.

Police tried to trap monkeys and catch them online, but they didn’t help, so they stepped up their efforts to quell the attacks by arming police with tranquilizer guns, which began on July 8.

Residents are advised to secure the windows and sliding doors that are the entrance to the macaques.

Japanese macaques are common in most parts of the country and are pest insects in some areas, consuming crops and invading homes.

However, a series of attacks in western Japan are rare, officials said. Both adults and children have scratches.

“Yamaguchi is all surrounded by mountains and it’s not uncommon to see monkeys,” a city official at the Agricultural Department told CNN and didn’t reveal her name. “But we rarely see so many attacks in a short period of time.”

Masato Saito of Yamaguchi City Hall said the number of attacks was unusual.

“This is a very rare event. They have never been to such an urban area and have hit so many people,” Saito said.
