JD Vance: Republican VP Pick with Indian American Wife Usha Chilukuri Vance
Former US President and Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has chosen Ohio Senator JD Vance as his running mate for the upcoming November presidential elections. Should Trump win, Vance will assume the role of Vice President of the United States.
JD Vance, acclaimed author of the bestselling memoir “Hillbilly Elegy” which examines the challenges faced by the White working class, has a significant Indian connection. At 39 years old, Vance is married to Indian American Usha Chilukuri Vance, whose ancestry traces back to Andhra Pradesh.
Usha Chilukuri Vance, a trial lawyer and former judicial clerk, has been a steadfast supporter throughout JD Vance’s political career and community initiatives.
Education and Career
Usha was raised in a suburb of San Diego, California, with a strong emphasis on education and hard work. Her academic achievements include serving as Managing Editor of the Yale Journal of Law & Technology and Executive Development Editor of The Yale Law Journal, according to a biography from Munger, Tolles & Olson law firm.
Following her four years of rigorous academic pursuits at Yale, she continued her studies as a Gates fellow at Cambridge University, where she engaged with various left-wing and liberal groups. She was a registered Democrat in 2014.
Meeting JD Vance at Yale Law School
Usha and JD Vance first met at Yale Law School and were married in Kentucky in 2014, with a Hindu priest presiding over a separate ceremony, as reported by the New York Times. The couple has three children together.
Over the years, JD Vance has credited his wife as a pivotal figure in his success, particularly during their time together at Yale University. In his 2016 memoir “Hillbilly Elegy,” Vance described her as his “Yale spirit guide,” helping him navigate life at the elite institution where they met.
“She instinctively understood the questions I didn’t even know to ask, and she always encouraged me to seek opportunities that I didn’t know existed,” he wrote.
Resignation After VP Announcement
In 2015, Usha started her career as an associate at Munger, Tolles & Olson, a prominent law firm with offices in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Washington, DC. She specialized in handling complex civil litigation and appeals across sectors including higher education, local government, entertainment, and technology, including semiconductors.
Following the announcement of JD Vance’s vice-presidential candidacy, Usha Vance resigned from Munger, Tolles & Olson. The firm acknowledged her contributions, describing her as an outstanding lawyer and colleague, and wished her success in her future endeavors.
