Korea-India Strategic Partnership in Korea’s Indo-Pacific Initiative: A Korean Perspective

In its recently announced Pivotal Nation Initiative, South Korea pledged to actively promote “freedom, peace and prosperity” in the Indo-Pacific, and has supported the US-led efforts for a “free and open Indo-Pacific.” Added the “Prosperity” element. Regarding the Yoon Suk-yeol administration’s de facto diplomatic manifesto, Jagannath Panda and I note that the Yoon administration has moved from the “structural ambiguity” of the previous Moon Jae-in administration to “strategic clarity.” (See Diplomats in January). (January 16, 2023 and January 27, 2023) The Yun administration is clearly sympathetic to the US-led Indo-Pacific vision, but does not intend to completely decouple it from China.
