KSU holds demonstrations against construction of 11-story hotel

Kunsill Studenti Universitarji (KSU) is demonstrating in the university quadrangle at 4pm on Wednesday, Sept. 7 to protest the construction of a high-rise hotel.

Through a Facebook event, KSU said, “It’s time to unite and rally to sustain student life. Who if not us?”

KSU encourages students to participate in this demonstration. We are also asking students to pick up used cardboard from the KSU office to use as placards.

Earlier this week, it was revealed that developer Mark Agius, one of Joseph Portelli’s business associates, has requested an additional floor to the already approved 10-story hotel.

The hotel project is located at the corner of Via Paolo Debono and Mons. Carmelo Zamit Street, replacing the building that previously housed the Mileva Bookstore.

The case officer’s recommendation was to reject the plan, but it was still approved.

A case officer said the proposed hotel plans violated local plans because the hotel was not considered acceptable in the area. Buildings are limited to one floor, semi-basement, and the area should be used for student dormitories, housing, and other student-related shops.

The case office further said the hotel would create a bare, blank party wall, which would have a negative impact on the environment.

KSU has stated that it fully agrees with the case officer’s reasons for refusal.

Din l-Art Helwa also voiced its objection to the hotel. They argued that a hotel could not be successfully integrated into such an already dense urban area.

KSU further said that the development would have a negative impact on students’ lives and would continue to neglect the development of services aimed at students in the area.

“Additional student housing is necessary, but this should not come at the expense of sustainability and proper infrastructure planning in line with local amenities,” KSU said. KSU holds demonstrations against construction of 11-story hotel
