Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn Adds Comfort to Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker in ‘Folie à Deux’ Trailer
Lady Gaga makes her highly anticipated debut as Harley Quinn alongside Joaquin Phoenix reprising his Oscar-winning role as the Joker in the newly released trailer for “Joker: Folie à Deux.”
The teaser begins with Phoenix’s Joker, known as Arthur Fleck, being led through a facility where he’s detained. As he passes through the corridor, he locks eyes with Quinn, portrayed by Gaga, standing in what appears to be a choir room.
“I’m nobody,” Quinn utters later in the trailer, miming a gun to her head. “I haven’t done anything with my life like you have.”
The trailer showcases scenes of the enamored duo strolling the streets, evading explosions, fleeing mobs, and sharing intimate moments, including a kiss through Fleck’s jail cell. All set to a haunting rendition of “What the World Needs Now is Love.”
“I’ll tell you what’s changed,” Fleck states at one point. “I’m not alone anymore.”
In DC comic lore, the Joker and Harley Quinn have often been depicted as each other’s love interests, with Quinn initially introduced as the villain’s therapist at Arkham Asylum.
Director Todd Phillips’ approach to these iconic characters in the sequel remains undisclosed, but given his treatment of the Joker in the 2019 film, it’s expected that “Folie” will offer a fresh interpretation from the comics.
“Folie” also features Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, and Zazie Beetz as Fleck’s neighbor Sophie.
The billion-dollar-grossing “Joker” earned two Oscars in 2020, including one for Phoenix as best actor.
“Joker: Folie à Deux” is set to hit theaters on October 4th.
