Mumbai: Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar remains under surveillance in the ICU of the city hospital here, the doctor treating her said Saturday.
The 92-year-old singer tested positive for the mildly symptomatic coronavirus and was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) at Breach Candy Hospital in South Mumbai last week.
Pratit Samdani, associate professor at Breach Candy Hospital, said Mangeskar will stay in the hospital for some time.
“She is still being monitored in the ICU. We have to wait and see. Pray for her recovery. She will stay in the hospital,” Samdani told PTI.
On Thursday, Mangeskar’s niece Rachana Shah said the singer was doing well.
“She’s fine and we’re happy about it. Everyone’s prayers went well. Kindly keep our privacy in mind, Shah told PTI.
According to Shah, Mangeskar was admitted to the ICU because he needed “continuous care” because of his age.
Considered one of the greatest singers of Indian cinema, Mangeskar started his career in 1942 at the age of 13 and has sung over 30,000 songs in several Indian languages.
In her more than 70 years of career, she has sung various memorable tracks such as “Ajeeb dastan hai ye”, “Pyar kiya to darna kya”, “Neela asman so gaya” and “Tereli ye”.
Known as India’s Nightingale, the singer has been hailed for numerous awards and honors, including Padma Bhushan, Padma Bhushan, the Dadasa Hebfalke Awards, and several National Film Awards.
She is also the recipient of Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor.
