Latvian Ministry of Economy communicates with clients only in Latvian – Baltic News Network

From September 1st, the Latvian Ministry of Economy and its direct agencies will start providing information and communicating with customers exclusively in Latvian.

The order issued by Minister Ilse Indriksson under Article 10 of the Official Languages Act regulates the Latvian Investment and Development Agency, the Consumer Rights Protection Center, the Latvian National Accreditation Authority, the Latvian National Construction Administration and the Central Statistics Office. From September 1, 2022, Latvia will start providing information and communicating with clients exclusively in Latvian, the national language of Latvia.

As a result, neither the ministry nor its agencies will require Russian language skills in job postings or allow employees to use Russian in their daily work.

According to Indriksone, like the rest of Europe, Latvian state institutions and their representatives must use only official languages for communication with residents and the media.

“Otherwise, the country will not only accept the special status of the Russian language over languages used by other minorities, but also promote multilingualism. It’s time to change this. »

A similar proposal was sent to companies in which the Ministry of Economy is a shareholder, asking them to communicate with their clients using only the Latvian language.

The proposal was sent to Latvenergo and its subsidiary, Sadales tīkls. The owner’s Public Asset Management Company also received the offer. The proposal invites Tet LLC, which provides TV and Internet content, to prioritize audio language selection, automatically making Latvian the default language and European languages or English as the next language. increase. We present the third country language as a final offer.
