‘Let Ħondoq be Ħondoq’ – Gozo coalition opposes development as appeal judgment looms

The Coalition for Gozo opposed the development of Ħondoq Bay in Gozo, Qala, saying the large-scale project would change the face of Gozo forever.

In a statement, the Gozo Union, including Din L-Art Ħelwa, Għawdix and Wirt Għawdex, said the Environmental Planning Review Court’s (EPRT) decision on the fate of the bay would be significant. If the proposed nature is allowed to go ahead, the coastline of Ħondoq “could be consigned to the dustbin of history”.

EPRT is expected to make a decision on Thursday Regarding the pending appeal filed by Gozo Prestige Hotels. The company wants to build a hotel and car park, 25 villas, 60 apartments and 200 multi-owner properties on the site. The proposal uses over 104,000 square meters of virgin land.

The coalition said it strongly supported the position of Carla Mayor Paul Buttigieg, who has fought against the project for 20 years. He also said he fully shares President George Vera’s warnings against threats to the natural environment and national heritage.

It states, “The areas of Dondok, which are still in pristine and pristine condition, should be left intact, while the polluted areas should be rehabilitated to better reflect the natural environment that characterizes this coastline. ” he said.

The Coalition said it trusted the EPRT to reject the proposal outright given the damage a large project would do to Gozo.
