Libya’s chief prosecutor orders the arrest of the Minister of Culture

Libya’s Supreme Prosecutor has ordered the State’s Minister of Culture to be imprisoned until an investigation into allegations of corruption is carried out.

Attorney General Al-Sediq al-Sour said in a statement Wednesday that Mabrouka Othman would be imprisoned for four days before investigations into alleged business and financial fraud and counterfeiting.

Suspicion of corruption stems from maintenance contracts for some ministries’ buildings this year.

According to the statement, the ministry maintained the facility in 2020.

The accusations include forgery of official documents to conceal misuse and fraud of public funds, he said.

Ottoman, a scholar with a degree in nuclear physics, was appointed in March as part of the country’s interim unified government.
