Mahathir Mohamad, former Malaysian Prime Minister hospitalized after testing positive for COVID-19

Kuala Lumpur, August 31: Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, 97, was hospitalized Wednesday after testing positive for COVID-19, his office said. “Mahathir has been admitted to the National Heart Institute for observation for several days on the advice of the medical team,” the statement said. Details about his condition have not been released.

Mahathir, who served as Malaysia’s Prime Minister for two terms, was once the world’s oldest leader. He has had his two coronary artery bypass surgeries and remains robust and resourceful. He was admitted to the same hospital several times earlier this year. Twitter removes a tweet by Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad justifying the knife attack in Nice, France.

Mahathir later said he was hospitalized after experiencing shortness of breath due to a lack of red blood cells. He said he thought he was dying at that point, but he somehow recovered.

Mahathir ruled Malaysia for 22 years before retiring in 2003. Fueled by anger over government corruption, he scored a historic victory in his 2018 election, ousting the ruling party in the first peaceful transfer of power since Malaysia’s independence in 1957.

At 92, Mahathir became the world’s oldest leader for the second time, but his victory lasted only 22 months as his regime collapsed in exile.

Mahathir formed a new Malay political party in 2020 and this year formed the Malay Alliance for elections scheduled for next year.

“If I’m strong enough and healthy enough, if they ask me to vote, I’m going to vote,” Mahathir said in an interview with the Associated Press earlier this month.
