Malta lose to Azerbaijan in crucial World Cup qualifier

Malta 0 – 2 Azerbaijan

The Malta Women’s National Team lost 2-0 to Azerbaijan in their final home World Cup qualifier at Centenary Stadium.

For the Azeri side, Christina Baccaranze and Diana Mamadova scored goals in each half to give the country three points.

As a result, Azerbaijan moved Malta to 4th place with 6 points, while Malta finished last with 4 points.

Malta will face Montenegro in the final match of this campaign in this competition.

Before the match, manager Mark Gat was presented with a memento by Malta FA President Bjorn Vassalo.

Gat has been in charge of the tournament since 2015 and will not continue as Malta’s women’s coach.

Azerbaijan created the first goal chance with a shot from a tight angle by Cristina Bakaranze.

The away side were still the superior team and the pressure counted when Baccaranze pounced on a loose ball and shot past Janis Schelleb.

Marta’s reply was swift through Shona Zamit who fired over the bar from the edge of the area.

Azerbaijan’s defender Nigal Mirzayreva headed in from a corner kick and shot wide wide of Shureb’s goal.

Marta was trying to pick up the ground with Maria Farguia just inches wide on goal before Rachel Cuschieri continued with another long-range effort, to no avail.

Fifteen minutes into the second half, coach Mark Gat made three changes and brought in Dorianne Teuma, Maya Lucia and Alicia Sultana in an attempt to get back into the game.

Nevertheless, it was Azeri who scored the next goal of the game when midfielder Diana Mamadova capitalized on a well-engineered positive transition.

Maltese defender Nicole Sibelas could have given the hosts one back, but her shot from a tight area went wide into the corner.

Forward Maria Farguia had a goal saved by Azerbaijan goalkeeper Aitaj Sharifova.

In the closing stages Malta tried to stage a late rally with Teuma also hitting the crossbar, but were unable to break out of Azelis as they fell into a home defeat.
