Marshal Konev and Astronaut Valentina Tereshkova have been deprived of their honorary citizenship

Prague councilor approved a document proposing that Soviet Marshall Ivan Konev, who led the Red Army in liberating Prague from the Nazi occupation, would be stripped of his honorary citizenship. According to the document, this decision was made in connection with the repressive role of the Soviet Marshal in the communist bloc over the next few decades, such as the repression of the Hungarian Revolution in 1956 and the construction of the Berlin Wall. This decision must be approved by the Prague City Council.

The statue of Marshal Konev was removed from its place in Prague 6 for the same reason after growing criticism from the general public.

Meanwhile, the city council of Ceske Budejovice has moved to deprive her of her honorary citizenship due to the fact that Soviet astronaut Valentina Tereshkova officially supported Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
