Mob Storm International Yoga Day event in Maldives, dramatic visuals

An unruly mob International Day of Yoga An event to be held in the Maldives on Tuesday. Dramatic visuals emerged from the men’s stadium in the capital. There, people play yoga asanas on exercise mats as mobs wave their flagpoles violently and cause confusion.

Police had to resort to the use of tear gas and pepper spray to contain the mob. The event was hosted by the Maldives Office of the High Commissioner for India, the Ministry of Youth Sports Community Empowerment and the United Nations Maldives. About 150 people attended the event, including the Maldives Minister of Youth Sports, the High Commissioner of India, the Secretary of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives, many High Commissioners, and the United Nations Resident Coordinator.

The mob attacked the attendees and destroyed their property. Protesters were previously reported to have exhibited placards claiming that yoga was a practice contrary to Islamic beliefs. In the aftermath of the turmoil, police arrested six people, police foreman Fathmath Nashwa told Reuters.

Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Sori took him to Twitter to confirm that police investigations had begun and the perpetrators were swiftly taken before the law.

“This is being treated as a serious concern and the person responsible will be quickly taken to the front of the law,” tweeted President Sori, an island nation with a population of 500,000. Islam is the state religion of the Maldives.
