Monaco meets emissions targets in almost all sectors except construction

A new report shows Monaco has met the Kyoto Protocol target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30%.

The Ministry of the Environment has released the Principality’s 2022 National Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory Report.

This report will be published in 2022, but is based on comparative data collected between 1990 and 2020. This data shows the levels of various substances that increase the impact of greenhouse gases retained under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

In 2020, the principality’s emissions fell significantly by 31.8% compared to 1990, reaching an all-time low. Last year he was down 18.8%, which was also a good result.

Key emitting sectors such as building energy demand, mobility and waste incineration saw emissions declines of 21%, 17% and 19% respectively between 2019 and 2020. Only the construction sector increased due to major projects underway and their continuations. 2020.

This national inventory report has been called a “crucial step” by the government. This ends the second period of the Kyoto Protocol, in which Monaco has pledged to cut its emissions by 30% in his 2020. This goal was achieved by a comfortable margin.

The next step is even more significant reductions, with the goal of reducing emissions by 55% by 2030 and becoming carbon neutral by 2050.
