Hyderabad: A tragic incident occurred during the celebration of the Sankranti Festival in the Mancherial district of Telangana. A couple riding a bicycle on an old Mancerial national road that was hit by a Chinese manja (kites).
The victim identified as Bimaya died on the spot due to heavy bleeding as the kite string was caught in the neck and suffered a deep cut. His wife was also injured during the incident.
The incident caused a sensation in the area for some time, and police moved the corpse to a government hospital for autopsy.
Rampant sales of Chinese Manja despite the ban:
Chinese manja is a synthetic high-strength string, often coated with powdered glass or even metal. Demand for manja in China continues to skyrocket as kite flying games peak during the Sankranthi season.
Chinese Manja is a machine-made polyester product, and this thread is strictly industrial. It is clearly printed on the reel that this is “industrial only”.
In 2016, the Telangana government issued an order banning kite-flying synthetic and nylon threads altogether. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has also passed an order affecting the total ban on the use of nylon or synthetic yarn in kite flying during the Sankranthi period.
