Muhyiddin should name 115 MP supporters

On 29 February 2020, the King appointed Muhyiddin Yassin as the 8th Prime Minister.

At that point, it was unclear whether Muhyiddin’s coalition, the Pelikatan Nacional, had a majority to form a government.

On the same day, another candidate, Dr. Mahathir Mohamed, released a statement along with a list of 113 lawmakers who supported him.

When Muhyiddin took office on March 1, 2020, Pakatan Harapan claimed to have 112 MP votes and his name was revealed.

The newly appointed prime minister came to power without voting or parliamentary powers.

Thus, Muhyiddin’s appointment was immediately met with calls for a vote of confidence in the next parliament.

In response, the new prime minister postponed the opening of the Diet from March 9 to May 18.

Muhyiddin is now demanding that Anwar prove he has a parliamentary majority, something the former prime minister himself did not bother to do when he took office.

Instead of asking Anwar for proof of his support, Muhyiddin should name the 115 MPs he continues to claim to have voted for.

But unlike Muhyiddin, Anwar said in his first press conference as prime minister that his government’s first job when parliament convened was to grant a credential motion proving he had the numbers. – November 25, 2022.
