Nadal defeats Cressy to raise the Melbourne Somerset trophy

Melbourne: Top-seeded Rafael Nadal won the Melbourne Summer Set title after defeating American qualifier Maxime Cressy in a straight set last Sunday. 35-year-old Nadal beat his opponent Cressy 7-6 (6), 6-3 in the final 1 hour and 44 minute collision at Rod Laver Arena.

The Spaniards have been playing for the first time since August this week after a leg injury shortened his 2021 season. However, World No. 6 showed few signs of rust in Melbourne and dropped the set at the ATP250 event to win the 89th tour-level crown.

In an interesting clash, Cressy attacked Nadal in his high-flying serve-and-volley game, but the Spaniards returned well throughout and had a great fight. At the age of 35, he saved set points in the first set tiebreaker and finally won the match after recovering from the second set breakdown.

“I would like to thank all the organizations here. I feel privileged and very lucky to be here. I am back from a rewarding moment in terms of injury. So I can’t be happier anymore. Nadal said at the trophy ceremony.

“This court has always been very special to me. Rod Laver Arena is very special to everyone and more special thanks to you. You are a lot of people and I thank you enough. You can’t, “he added.

Nadal has been in the first final in Australia since losing to Novak Djokovic in the 2019 Australian Open Championship match. With his victory, Topseed has been winning at least one tour-level title each year since 2004.

Meanwhile, Cressy was in the first tour-level final after defeating two-seeded Reilly Opelka and three-seeded Grigor Dimitrov.

Cressy will be in the top 100 of the ATP rankings for the first time on Monday, following her dream run in Melbourne.
