New IRA claims man detained after Northern Ireland criminal shooting

A man has been arrested in connection with New IRA claims of responsibility for the shooting death of senior detective John Caldwell.

A man was arrested in Delhi on Saturday.

That was after a message of the type allegedly from the New IRA was posted on a city wall claiming responsibility for Caldwell’s attempted murder.

Police said the new IRA was the main target of the investigation.

The detective remains critically ill in hospital after being shot several times at a sports complex in Omagh last month.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Detectives investigating the Feb. 22 attempted murder of Chief Detective John Caldwell have arrested a man in connection with allegations of responsibility after the attack.

“The man was arrested under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

“He was arrested on the morning of Saturday 18th March after a property search in Derry/Londonderry.

“He was taken to the Musgrave Serious Crimes Chamber for questioning.”
