Nathenael Gemechu, a student at Northwestern University in Qatar, told Doha News that conversations about ChatGPT have already begun as the new school year begins.
“One of our professors raised concerns about cheating and plagiarism using AI assistance,” said Gemechu.
The professor’s essays mentioned were often submitted online. However, upon discovering the existence of ChatGPT, he implemented some significant changes.
“We now have to do an essay in a timed class. I didn’t believe it was powerful enough to detect cheating,” added the fourth-grader.

Naji Musa, a parent and Doha-based tech expert, has a unique perspective on what ChatGPT can bring to the education sector.
“I see ChatGPT not as a threat, but as a valuable educational opportunity.
He believes ChatGPT’s ability to understand and respond to natural language input makes it an ideal resource to help with homework and research projects.
As a student, Gemechu agrees.
“For example, if you ask me about the Biafra war, instead of going to Google and spending time researching it, they literally explain it to me as if I was a five-year-old. I believe it will speed up.”
Chief Technology echoes a similar sentiment, saying it can improve student efficiency.
“Working on ChatGPT and completing mundane tasks makes students more efficient and gives them time to focus on generating new ideas and critical thinking. This is the most important skill for future success.” ,” he said.

Plagiarism is one of the main concerns educators have regarding the use of language models like ChatGPT. But Musa said he expects ChatGPT to integrate with plagiarism checking platforms such as TurnItIn to help detect and prevent plagiarism.
Educating students about plagiarism, encouraging the use of citations, giving students access to authoritative sources of information, encouraging original thought and creativity, using software to detect plagiarism, self-reflection and self-evaluation facilitates and incorporates peer reviews, group projects, and class discussions. There are other solutions that educators can integrate into their classes.
Musa believes these steps promote balance and enable students to use ChatGPT’s sophisticated features in an ethical manner.
“When it comes to college essays, it definitely challenges the idea that students have real jobs, but I think college essays are generally outdated methods. There are still different ways to get over cheating,” Gemech said.
