Oscar Winner Haggis Held Over Accusation of Sexual Assault-English

(ANSA)-Rome, June 20-Oscar-winning Canadian director Paul Haggis was detained in Southern Italy after a woman accused him of sexual assault.

The 69-year-old woman has been accused of having a non-Italian young woman have a two-day non-consensual sexual relationship in the town of Ostuni, Puglia.

The filmmaker said through lawyer Michele Laforsia that he was “totally innocent.”

Haggis was reportedly under house arrest at either a hotel or a villa in the area.

He was in Italy to attend the “Allora Fest” film festival in Ostuni.

In another case, a woman accused Haggis of raping in 2013 in 2018, and he faces a civil lawsuit over these allegations.

Three other women then filed a complaint against Haggis for sexual misconduct.

Haggis won the Best Screenplay Award and Best Work Award at the 2006 Academy Awards for Screenplay.

He also wrote the script for another Oscar-winning movie, Million Dollar Baby. (ANSA).
