Over 18,000 have crossed the English Channel this year – Middle East Monitor

The UK Ministry of Defense has released figures revealing that more than 18,000 refugees have crossed the English Channel this year.

337 people crossed in 10 boats on Saturday, before Border Patrol rescued 696 people on Monday, making it the busiest day of 2022.

MOD figures also show that 1,709 people were rescued and brought to the UK in the first few days of August. That’s more than half of his 3,053 people rescued throughout August 2021.

12,840 people have crossed since Home Secretary Priti Patel announced a refugee partnership with Rwanda on 14 April.

Last month, a group of parliamentarians said there was no evidence of that, given that many people have already traveled this year. Rwanda’s scheme results in fewer crossings.

The Channel Crossing is at the center of a Conservative leadership race, with both Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss outlining plans to tighten border security.

Truss says she would if she was elected leader Double the number of Border Patrol officers patrolling the Straits And deport more immigrants.

Snak said he would regain control of Britain’s borders and “reform the broken asylum laws”.

The two leaders have said they will pursue more Rwandan-style deals with other countries.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the British Red Cross released a report on Wednesday that people seeking safety in the UK may be at risk of exploitation due to gaps in the UK’s asylum system. Did.

Vulnerable people are forced into modern-day slavery, including sexual exploitation and coercion, the report says.

The report emphasized too much emphasis on immigration enforcement rather than security and protection, which is preventing people from disclosing their experiences.

“Inadequate training of senior officials, slow decision-making, poor housing and too little support put all at risk of poverty and exploitation,” the report said.
