At least seven Indian states and federal territories are on high alert after it was reported that 3,000 cattle died from the disease and about 50,000 remain infected. In South Asia, it was first reported in Bangladesh in 2019 and has spread to India and China. Mortality is about 1-5%. LSD is spread through mosquitoes, flies, blood-sucking insects, contaminated water, and food. Symptoms include body aches, discharge from the nose and eyes, fever, blisters all over the body, and difficulty eating. Most state governments, including Haryana, Rajasthan and Punjab, said the vaccine would be administered to sick cows. Infection, sanitation of cowsheds, spraying of disinfectants to control disease, governments also require infected livestock to be quarantined.

Given that India is the world’s largest milk producer, accounting for 22% of total production, Lumpy Skin Dizzy (LSD) – a viral disease that affects livestock – is a serious threat. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) describes LSD as a “borne pox disease” “characterized by the appearance of skin nodules”.
At least seven Indian states and federal territories are on high alert after 3,000 cows were reportedly dead from lumpy skin disease and about 50,000 remain infected.
Several media outlets reported 6,000 deaths in Rajasthan alone and 2,633 in Gujarat. At least 600 cows have reportedly died in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh, while Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Andaman and Nicobar Islands are also affected.
LSD has been endemic in Africa for decades. In South Asia, it was first reported in Bangladesh in 2019 and has spread to India and China. Mortality is about 1-5%.
