A Pakistan Army helicopter carrying out relief operations in the flood-hit southwest of the country has gone missing after losing communication with a regional control tower, the military said.

The fate of the six crew members, including the commander-in-chief, was not immediately known.

The military said Monday a search was underway for the aircraft, but did not say if it had crashed.

The regional commander on board, Lt. Gen. Sarfraz Ali, was overseeing relief efforts in the flood-affected southwest.

The development comes hours after officials said another 140 people had died over the past week in flash floods caused by heavy monsoon rains.

The death toll takes Pakistan’s overall death toll from rain-related incidents since June to 478.

Since last week when the government deployed helicopters to expand its ongoing relief efforts, military-backed rescue workers have delivered thousands of distressed people, including women and children, to southwestern Balochistan and other parts of the country. I’ve been evacuated from the northwest and elsewhere.

Nearly 37,000 homes have been completely destroyed or damaged by severe flooding in flood-affected areas since June 14, according to a report released by the National Disaster Management Agency.

Prime Minister Shabazz Sharif visited Balochistan on Monday and promised financial aid to those left homeless in the floods in a televised speech.

More rain is expected this week in Pakistan, where the monsoon season lasts from July to September.
