US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi ignored warnings from China and Russia to land in Taiwan.

Pelosi, who arrived in Taipei on Tuesday, became the first high-ranking US official to visit an autonomous island claimed by China in 25 years.

“Our congressional delegation’s visit to Taiwan celebrates the United States’ unwavering commitment to uphold Taiwan’s vibrant democracy.” Pelosi said in a statement Shortly after her plane landed.

Pelosi said her visit “in no way” contradicts the official US policy of recognizing “one China” and not officially recognizing Taiwan as an independent state.

But she said, “As the world faces a choice between dictatorship and democracy, America’s solidarity with Taiwan’s 23 million people is more important than ever.”

“The United States continues to oppose unilateral efforts to change the status quo,” she added, referring to Beijing’s pressure on Taipei to return to the mainland.

White House Press Secretary John Kirby dismissed Beijing’s sharp criticism, saying it was not the first time a U.S. lawmaker had visited Taiwan.

Earlier, live television images showed the 82-year-old MP flying into Taipei Songshan Airport on a US military plane and being greeted by Foreign Minister Joseph Wu upon arrival.

Taiwanese media reported that Pelosi will meet with Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen and lawmakers.

rising tension

Her visit sparked tensions between China and the United States.

China’s foreign ministry said in a statement that Pelosi’s visit was “extremely dangerous”.

China has vowed to launch “targeted military action” following Pelosi’s visit.

“The Chinese People’s Liberation Army is on high alert and has launched a series of targets to counter it, resolutely safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and resolutely block external interference and ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist attempts. We will launch a limited military operation,” he said in a statement condemning the visit.

China has previously warned that the United States would “pay the price” if Pelosi visited Taiwan during her Asia tour.

Russia calls visit ‘pure provocation’

“This tour and the possible visit to Taiwan are pure provocation,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters in the capital Moscow on Tuesday.

He accused the United States of choosing a “confrontational path” and said the potential visit was raising tensions in the Asia-Pacific region.

“I would like to emphasize once again that we are in full solidarity with China. China’s attitude on this issue is understandable and fully justified,” Peskov said.

The Biden administration did not explicitly urge her to call it off, but tried to ensure that the Chinese government was not suggesting a change in US policy regarding Taiwan.

‘playing with fire’

Shortly before her arrival, Chinese state media announced that the latest Su-35 fighter jets were crossing the Taiwan Strait. The brief report gave no details about the timing or exact location of the crossing.

Taiwanese officials have been tight-lipped about the visit, but China claims the autonomous islands as part of its own territory, and if its “sovereignty and territorial integrity” are threatened, its military will says, “I will not just stand by.”

Since speculation of the visit began, it has conducted several military drills near Taiwan.

Last week, Chinese President Xi Jinping told US President Joe Biden to “don’t play with fire” over Taiwan.
