WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – In the long run, Russia does not pose the same level of risk to the international order that the United States and Russia seek to maintain, US Under Secretary of Defense Colin Carl said Wednesday.
“Russia will not challenge the United States or the rules-based international order in the long term, but in the short term it is a very dangerous actor,” Karl said in an interview.
The Pentagon’s National Defense Strategy classifies China as a “pacing threat” that can counter the United States in many areas, including defense, technology and economics, Karl said.
But Russia is strategically classified as a “serious threat” that poses a more immediate threat to the United States and the world order it wants, Karl said.
The United States does not intend to escalate tensions with China, which has been strained by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s recent visit to Taiwan. The U.S. will continue to show its support for Taiwan in a manner consistent with historical norms, Carl said.
US continues to supply HIMARS ammunition to Ukraine
Separately, Karl said the US will continue to supply Ukraine with precision ammunition for the HIMARS multiple rocket system.
