Malaysian state energy company Petronas said on Wednesday that it had signed an agreement with Japanese shipping company MOL to explore opportunities for liquefied carbon dioxide (CO2) transportation in the Asia-Pacific and Oceania regions.
Petronas said in a statement that the parties will jointly study liquefied CO2 transport for the carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) value chain.
Liquefied CO2 transport helps connect CCUS sites safely and efficiently over long distances where pipelines are not economically viable.
“This collaboration is important because long-distance liquefied CO2 transport plays an important role in the CCUS value chain,” said Petronas Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of Upstream Adif Zulkifli.
According to Petronas, MOL and the Norwegian shipping management company Larvik Shipping AS operate liquefied CO2 vessels for food-grade CO2 and will contribute their expertise to the research.
