Phased abolition of “Banjiha” as housing

The city of Seoul is pushing to prevent people from living in semi-basement housing. The move follows the deaths of four members of her family in a flooded semi-underground house in southwest Seoul when record rains hit the capital a week ago. The city government is finally moving in the right direction, saying it will no longer grant permits for semi-basement apartments and that such existing housing will convert to non-residential use over time. This policy can make life even more difficult for residents of such homes if they are not provided with alternative housing and are hastily evicted.
