Plane bound for Alaska's west coast halted takeoff after flat tire caused runway collision
After a Southwest Airlines plane was cleared to pass near the end of the same runway Thursday morning, the pilot of an Alaska Airlines plane aborted takeoff and came to a sudden halt, causing the plane to suffer a flat tire, in an incident now under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration.
The crew of Alaska Airlines Flight 369 had received clearance from air traffic control at Nashville International Airport for takeoff to Seattle at approximately 9:15 a.m. when the accident occurred.
“We appreciate the expertise of our pilots, who immediately applied the brakes to prevent the accident from becoming worse,” Alaska Airlines said in a statement. “Our pilots train for these situations and handled this situation with skill.”
The airline added that as the crew left the runway and headed towards the terminal, heat build-up during the sudden stop caused the plane's tyres to deflate.
Alaska Airlines says the plane's tires are designed to do just that.
None of the 176 passengers and six crew members on board the plane were reported to be injured.
“The passenger deplaned and arrived at the terminal safely,” the airline said in a statement. “We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused to passengers and crew.”
While maintenance technicians in Nashville were inspecting the plane, Alaska Airlines dispatched another plane to the airport to fly passengers to Seattle.
