Portimão’s Vai e Vem town bus network was reinforced with 10 new electric buses that were unveiled on Monday and put into service on Tuesday.
The goal is to add eight more electric buses to the network in 2023.
“The time has come to bring electric vehicles to the Algarve region,” said Ricardo Afonso of Sandbus Transportes, the concessionaire responsible for the bus network in partnership with Vamus Algarve.
A company representative added that around €3.6 million has been invested in the purchase of the new electric buses.
On the other hand, Portimao Mayor Isilda Gómez emphasized a ‘paradigm shift’ when it comes to energy, ‘at a time of great importance when climate change is a daily occurrence.
“In the future, 40% of the Vai e Vem bus fleet of 26 vehicles is already electrified, and with the addition of the remaining 8 buses, it will reach 70%. A rare proportion, for a municipality in Portugal,” Gomez said.
The mayor added, “This is the first step in the fight against climate change and a very important step. We need to look to the future, the future is zero emissions.”
