President Somalia suspends prime minister in election spats on suspicion of corruption

Mogadishu: Somali President Mohammed Pharmaho said on Monday that he had suspended Prime Minister Mohammed Roble on suspicion of corruption.

Pharmaho accused Roble of being involved in the corruption and misuse of public land the day after he accused Roble of failing to complete the election process.

“The prime minister’s work and authority were suspended until the investigation was over,” Pharmaho said.

Prime Minister Pharmaho said Deputy Prime Minister Mahdi Mohamed Greed would act as Prime Minister and that Roble would remain suspended until Roble’s investigation was completed.

Pharmaho urged all government officials to refrain from misappropriating public land and comply with national laws and regulations.

The president’s statement came hours after Roble made two appointments. It was believed that Pharmaho was intended to thwart the ongoing investigation by the Ministry of Defense.

Analysts say the current political rift between the two top leaders will again delay the election process, which is due to be completed by early 2022. Parliamentary elections, which began on November 1, have already been suspended after only 24 of the 275 members were elected.
