The lack of rainfall has been exacerbated by successive heatwaves, Mr Born continued. This in turn will not only increase evaporation, but also increase water demand, reported the DPA news agency.

She added that the situation could continue for the next two weeks, making it even more worrying.

In France, much of the mainland is suffering from drought.

Depending on severity, various water restrictions apply, including irrigation.

Local media reported that some municipalities had temporarily cut off water supply.

Bourne urged residents to use water sparingly.
