Private Involvement in Urban Renewal Projects Frustrates Locals

[InTime News]

The City of Athens project to beautify Strefi Hill in the city center has faced strong opposition from some individuals and so-called groups in the neighboring Exarchia district, as private companies are donors to the project.

The municipality has invited private investors to donate to the project. The project aims to improve boardwalks and leisure facilities on landslide-prone hills that can endanger the surrounding densely populated areas.

Exarchia has long been a haven for anarchists and leftists who vehemently oppose state presence in the region, as well as commercial activity of any kind. Long-time residents of the neighborhood disagree about the enormous influence of these groups, who are also vehemently opposed to building an Athens metro station on Exarchia’s central square.

Engineers who surveyed the hill earlier this week before construction were accompanied by riot police to fend off attacks.
