Psychotherapy covered by Swiss basic health insurance

From 1 July 2022, RTS reports that psychotherapy provided by trained psychologists will be reimbursed under the basic Swiss compulsory health insurance.

To be eligible for a refund, the service must be prescribed by your doctor and meet certain conditions. No service charges have been set. The federal government and Canton still need to calculate the price of refundable services. For the time being, a provisional rate of CHF 154.80 will be applied until December 31, 2024.

In addition, there is a limit to the number of target sessions. Prescriptions allow up to 15 and could be a second prescription of 15 more. After 30 sessions, you must report to the insurance company’s advisor with a maximum of 40 sessions.

Currently, psychotherapy is not refundable unless provided by a psychiatrist or a psychiatrist with an approved status.

This change is being made by the World Health Organization Latest report About the state of global mental health. According to the report, about 1 billion people lived with mental health problems in 2019. Globally, about 70% of people suffering from mental illness do not have access to mental health care, the report said.

According to the Federal Council, this change costs CHF 100 million annually and can reach CHF 170 million. No information is provided on how to raise additional costs. Despite cost savings in other areas, additional money will probably need to come from higher premiums and taxes. Wondering how to pay higher premiums and taxes only adds to the anxiety.
