The Municipal Ministry has completed an annual project to purchase and receive local dates for the country’s 2021 agricultural season.
The Department of Agriculture purchased 816 tonnes of dates from 76 farms to support local agriculture. The project started in 2006 and is allocated 10 million QARs on the day of purchase each year.
Municipalities, represented by the Department of Agriculture, have made this effort and investment to support local farmers by diversifying local produce, especially local date stores of all kinds.
In addition to this project, the ministry also offers other retailers to local farmers. The annual festival is held and includes events scheduled at both local and international levels. It aims to encourage local farmers to develop production and quality wisely. We are increasing production efficiency as a whole.
Qatar’s palm tree reserves are estimated at 650,000 to 700,000, covering 2.2 hectares, and together with its subsidiary NAFCO, export multiple types of date palms through the Hasad Food Company.
The Department of Agriculture received the date through a professional technical team. Agricultural products are inspected to ensure compliance with technical conditions and specifications. This is done in collaboration with one of the local factories that specializes in the fields of manufacturing and packing days.
Most of these dates were allocated to marketing through the consumer complex, while the rest were given to Qatar Charity and Qatar Red Crescent and distributed to people in need, both domestically and internationally.
In 2021, the Ministry of the Environment predicted that this year’s country’s date palm production will reach 27,000 tonnes. This is equivalent to achieving a domestic self-sufficiency rate of 76%.
