An Iranian government spokesman said yesterday that Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi is preparing to visit Russia at the invitation of his counterpart Vladimir Putin. This is the first time since 2017.
President Putin invited Raisi to Moscow “in the framework of a strategic interaction between Iran and Russia” early next year, Ali Bahadori Jaromi said.
Since taking office as president in August from moderate Hassan Rouhani, who visited Russia in March 2017, it has been the most important overseas official visit for Laisi.
“I hope the Iranian president will accept my invitation and visit Russia early next year,” Putin said in a joint news conference with the Greek Prime Minister earlier this month, according to Kremlin’s official website. ..
Moscow and Teheran have strong political, economic and military ties, share common interests in Afghanistan, and are major allies in the decade-long civil war of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Russia is also one of the parties to the 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and the world’s major powers, which eased Tehran sanctions in exchange for curbing nuclear development programs.
Bahadori Jaromi said the visit will address “bilateral, regional and national cooperation,” especially “economic and commercial” cooperation.
