Dissidents in SJB, JVP, SLFP, SLPP vote against budget proposal

The second reading of the 2023 budget passed yesterday with a majority of 37 votes in parliament.

The poll, which took place at 6 p.m., was 121 in favor and 84 against.

Dissidents from SJB, JVP, SLFP and SLPP voted against the budget proposal.

The second reading vote was originally scheduled for 5pm yesterday, but was later postponed until 6pm.

Tamil Makkal Thesiya Kootan (TMTK) MP CV Wigneswaran abstained from voting.

Debate on the second reading of the fiscal 2023 appropriations bill began in Congress at 9:30 a.m. on November 15.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe, as finance minister, presented the budget to parliament on November 14.

The appropriation bill’s committee-level debates are scheduled to continue today through December 8, except on Sunday.

A final vote on the budget is scheduled for December 8th at 5pm.
