Russian President Vladimir Putin signature A presidential directive promoting a simplified process of granting Russian citizenship to residents of the Kherson and Zaporizhia regions of Ukraine. This document was published on the official legal information portal of the Russian government.

This order will be added to the text of a document in 2019 by Russian authorities that has simplified the citizenship process of residents of the “People’s Republic” of Donetsk and Luhansk. Specifically, citizenship applications for residents of these areas are more than three months.

The order is already in effect.

  • After Russia invaded Ukraine, the Zaporizhia and Kherson regions were placed under Russian military control. Representatives of the “new government” in the region said they were aiming to become part of Russia in the past. As part of that, Russian authorities have promised that the region “occupies a legitimate position in our Russian family.”
