Drivers on State Route 66 and Interstate 40 in New Mexico recently noticed an error in the highway sign that spelled the city of Albuquerque as “Albuqueque.” According to media reports, people called the Department of Transportation to report the missing “R”. A spokeswoman for the network, Kimberly Gallegos, told The Associated Press that she believed it was “just a mistake.” Surprisingly, a different ‘R’ was used for the city in the 18th century. In 1706, King Philip of Spain allowed settlers to establish a new community on the banks of the Rio Grande. The colonial governor, Francisco Cuervo y Valdes, wrote to the Duke of Alburquerque of Spain, telling him that it was named after him. Over time the first “R” was removed. Besides Albuquerque, other commonly misspelled American city names include Brooklyn, Cleveland, Novi, Michigan, and Frankfort.
