In April, in the well-preserved town of Tornava, archaeologists discovered Barbican, another part of the city’s fortress near the Infraphylum.

Barbican was a large building that was supposed to protect the gate. Construction was prompted by the heightened danger of coming from the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century.

“The current masonry discoveries are south of the Lower Gate near Strelecká Street,” explained Peter Grznár of the Trnava Office at the Monuments Board. He added that the findings were about a part of the wall around the east.

However, further research is needed in the area of SNP Square to get an overall picture of the Barbican floor plan.

The lower gates of the medieval walls of Trnava were demolished in early 1819 not only because of their poor condition, but also because they wanted to expand the city.

Barbican was previously dismantled.
