MOSCOW (Sputnik) – A new Multiple Rocket System (MLRS) is being developed in Russia and will work in both manned and unmanned modes, its developers told Sputnik.
“We are currently developing a robotization kit for the regular BMP-3. [infantry fighting vehicle]We are also working on the robotization of a promising multiple launch rocket system. This makes it possible to eliminate the crew of the combat vehicle from being in the danger zone, but also preserves the ability of a person to control his MLRS from the cockpit of the combat vehicle, ”said Vladimir Pimenov, General Director VNII Signal (part of Rostec High Precision Systems Holding Company) said:
If put to practical use, it will be the first robotic weapon of its kind in the Russian military.
Pimenov explained to Sputnik that “full” robotization of MLRS is inappropriate, as unmanned mode inevitably reduces its technical performance.
