Russia launches rocket with first satellite of Sfera orbital constellation

VOSTOCHNY COSMODROME (Sputnik) – Russia launches the Soyuz-2.1b rocket with the Skif-D satellite, the first orbital spacecraft from the Sfera (Sphere) multi-satellite orbital constellation, and three Gonets-M communication satellites. Sputnik correspondent reported. Saturday.

The satellite will be in orbit in a few hours.

Roscosmos President Yuri Borisov and Russian Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov watched the launch.

The Skif-D satellite will demonstrate the capabilities of Russia’s future broadband internet system called Skif, which will be part of the Sfera constellation. Another demonstrator, his Marafon satellite for the Internet of Things, is also scheduled for launch. In late 2025, Russia will orbit its first her Express-RV satellite for a highly elliptical Earth orbit.

Overall, the Sfera constellation will contain 162 satellites instead of the originally planned 500.
