San Jose animal shelter at capability, over 900 pets want houses

The San Jose Animal Care and Providers Heart is seeing record-high numbers of animals coming to the shelter, with greater than 900 canines, cats and different pets calling the shelter house as of late Could.

Jay Terrado, the Deputy Director of the middle, stated what’s occurring in San Jose is a part of a broader nationwide disaster happening in shelters throughout the nation of extra pets arriving and staying longer. With so many animals on the shelter, the middle is pleading with the group to assist out, and warning that their potential to assist new animals is restricted due to their strapped capability.

As of late Could, there have been round 250 canines and puppies, roughly 600 cats and kittens, and several other dozen different pets, resembling rabbits, on the shelter. To handle the variety of animals in want of care, the shelter stated it was solely taking in sick, injured or aggressive pets, and asking the general public to faucet their networks – using rehoming platforms like home-home.org or www.adoptapet.com, social media, and different channels – earlier than turning an animal in on the heart.

On the San Jose Animal Care and Providers Heart alone, the variety of pets coming to the shelter jumped 85% from March to April of this yr. The variety of kittens jumped almost 300% from March to April, with 743 kittens surrendered to the shelter final month alone. The shelter expects these numbers to worsen within the coming months, as soon as “peak kitten season” begins in June.

“Now is a superb time to think about fostering or adopting a shelter animal,” San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan stated in a press release. “With our shelter at capability, taking in an animal can save the lifetime of one other.”

Adoptable animals might be discovered on the shelter’s web site.
