Saudi Arabia welcomes killing of al Qaeda leader

Saudi Gazette report

Jeddah — Saudi Arabia welcomed US President Joe Biden’s announcement of the killing of al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported early Tuesday morning, citing a foreign ministry statement.

“Al-Zawahiri is seen as one of the leaders of terrorism who spearheaded the planning and execution of the heinous terrorist operations in the United States and Saudi Arabia,” it said.

“These terrorist operations have killed thousands of innocent people of various nationalities and religions, including Saudi citizens.”

SAUDI ARABIA underscored the importance of enhancing cooperation and undertook concerted international efforts to combat and eradicate terrorism. Saudi Arabia called on all countries to cooperate with the framework to protect innocent people from terrorist organizations, the statement concluded.

The White House said on Monday that the US conducted a counterterrorism operation over the weekend against an unnamed al-Qaeda target in Afghanistan.

“The operation was successful and there were no civilian casualties,” the statement read.

The raid comes after the US completes its full withdrawal from Afghanistan in late August 2021.
