/ Union

The basic taxi fare in Seoul will increase by 26 percent from the current 3,800 won to 4,800 won (1,355 won to the dollar) next year.

In the revised bill drafted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government on the 26th, the starting distance of the basic toll will be shortened from the current 2km to 1.6km, and the late-night toll will start at 10:00 p.m., two hours earlier.

If the revised bill is passed, it will be the first increase in four years from February next year.

The meter ticks faster from W100 per 132 m to W100 per 131 m, or from W100 per 31 seconds to W100 per 30 seconds.

The late-night surcharge rate will be raised from the current 20% to two levels, and a 40% surcharge will be imposed during peak demand hours from 11:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. Currently W4,600~W5,300.

A public hearing will be held next Monday. A city official said, “We need to raise taxi fares to make it easier to find taxis late at night.” “However, in the process of gathering public opinion, some of the plans may be revised.”
