Record-breaking rains hit much of the Seoul metropolitan area on Monday and Tuesday, leaving nine dead and seven missing. Heavy rains have flooded and destroyed roads and subway stations, causing landslides and clogging groundwater drainage systems, forcing people living in low-lying areas to evacuate.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, the country’s central weather monitoring agency, the hourly rainfall observed in the metropolitan area was the highest in 80 years. Seoul’s Dongjak district was hit by the heaviest rainfall in the city, with 422mm of precipitation on Monday alone.
