Seven-time winner Messi misses Ballon d’Or nomination

Paris: Seven-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi paid a high price for his dominance in his first season at Paris Saint-Germain when he was left off the list of the top 30 of this year’s coveted football awards .

2019 runner-up Lucy Bronze was one of only three members of England’s Euro-winning side to be shortlisted for the women’s award.

Messi, who won the title last year, has been a regular nominee since 2006 and has been in the top three since 2007, with the exception of 2018.

However, the 35-year-old Messi missed out on the 2022 award after moving from Barcelona to the French capital.

The format change also worked against the Argentine superstars as the Ballon d’Or no longer recognizes the Player of the Year.

Instead, it is based on the season’s record, which, according to the criteria, highlights the candidates’ “individual performances” and “definitive and memorable characters.”

After leaving Barcelona in the summer of 2021, Messi has been unable to imprint his genius on a PSG team coveted for the Champions League title.

The French champions were eliminated in the last 16 at the hands of eventual winners Real Madrid.

In total, Messi has scored just 11 goals for PSG, and his relatively indifferent club form could impress France Football Magazine, organizers of the Ballon d’Or, which will be awarded in Paris on 17 October. I could not do it.

PSG team-mate Neymar has also missed the season with 13 goals in 28 appearances.

The rest of the shortlist should not come as a surprise.

French international striker Karim Benzema is by far the favorite behind Real Madrid’s 14th Champions League title.

He finished the European campaign with 15 goals.

Benzema becomes the fifth French winner after Raymond Copa (1958), Michel Platini (1983, 1984, 1985), Jean-Pierre Papin (1991) and Zinedine Zidane (1998) There is a possibility.

In the 2021/2022 season, Benzema scored 44 goals in 46 appearances, helping the Madrid side to win the LaLiga title.

His goal in Wednesday’s 2-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt in the European Super Cup took the 34-year-old to 324 goals for the Spanish giants.

This puts him above Raul on the club’s all-time list, with Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of him with 450.

“He’s a candidate for the Ballon d’Or. No doubt? For me, no,” Real coach Carlo Ancelotti said.

Five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo from Manchester United has been nominated again this year.

Benzema joins team-mates Thibaut Courtois, Casemiro, 2018 winner Luka Modric, Vinicius and former Chelsea player Antonio Rudiger on the 30-man list.

Defeated Champions League finalists Liverpool have 7 players nominated, more than any other club.

Darwin Nunez, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk since Trent Alexander-Arnold, Luis Diaz, Fabinho and Sadio Mane moved to Bayern Munich.

The women’s Ballon d’Or has a strong list of 20 players, including Bronze, Millie Bright and Arsenal forward Beth Meade, who won the Golden Boot in the Women’s Euros.

France is nominated in four categories: Selma Bacha, Kadidiatu Diani, Marie Antoinette Catoto and Wendy Renard.

Defending champion Alexia Pteras, who was ruled out of the Euros by a last-minute injury, and Norwegian star Ada Hegerberg, who won the first award in 2018, are also on the shortlist.
