A bus carrying Indian Highland Border Patrol officers tumbled off a mountain road in Kashmir on Tuesday (August 16) and plunged into a gorge, killing at least six police officers, police said.
The wreckage of the bus was strewn alongside the fast-flowing river as locals and authorities helped evacuate the wounded to waiting ambulances. A police officer told Reuters that 35 people survived the crash, although some suffered serious injuries.
Kashmir police said on Twitter that the injured were being taken to an army hospital in Srinagar, a major city in the Himalayan region, about 90 kilometers from the accident site in Anantnag district.
The bus carried members of the Indo-Tibet Border Police, a federal force that specializes in high-altitude operations primarily on the India-China border.
