Sri Lanka considers ‘failure’ at independence milestone

Sri Lanka celebrated 75 years of independence today with a solemn military parade. This is because the president of the country urged reflection on past “mistakes and failures” that put the nation at risk.

Since the end of British rule in 1948, the island nation has experienced much of its history, including decades of Tamil separatist rebellions that claimed up to 100,000 lives and two deadly communist uprisings. I spent my time at war with my country.
