Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe took office as acting president of the country on Friday (July 15), according to government officials.
Wickremesinghe was already in that role after former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled the country on Wednesday (July 13) after months of anti-government protests.
Wickremesinghe has served as interim president and has not been decided, but it is also the first option for the ruling party to take over full-time. The opposition candidate is Sajith Premadasa, and the potential dark horse is senior member Dallas Alaha Perma.
Sri Lanka has begun preliminary discussions with the International Monetary Fund on potential bailout loans, which have been interrupted by the recent government turmoil.
